The exceptionally strong, stable clockwise gyre continues over the Gulf.

This is a profoundly important breaking terrestrial event related to the Oil Volcano at the bottom of the Gulf.  History is being made on many levels.

As can be seen in the satellite view of water vapor movement in the Western Atlantic, the precision of this gyre over the Gulf is a major feature of the weather patterns this week.. As it has for the past 72 hours, the air mass today on the western side appears to be tending in the main towards the northeast, the air mass along the northern edge of the Gulf is flowing to the east, while air mass is flowing to the southeast along Florida. The main flow of BP's pollution in the Gulf today is now drifting increasingly more towards Florida than into the northern Gulf shores.

How long this condition will persist is unknown.

As it has for the past few days, the current movement of air mass related to the Gulf gyre could bring pollution and fallout from the BP spill along the coastal zone of Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia, Alabama, and Florida.

Today's movement of air mass indicates that Cuba could become as greatly victimized by BP toxic fumes as Florida is likely to be. The toxic air mass could migrate across Cuba and into the Yucatan and Central Mexico before migrating up into Texas to complete a complete spiral around the Caribbean Gyre. This gyre mimics what cyclones do, but with two notable exceptions.  The air is moving clockwise (anti-coriolis effect), which is opposite to the direction of hurricanes in the Northern Hemisphere . The volume and scale of the gyre are immense, many times larger than the typical diameter of a major hurricane.  This may protect the Gulf area from hurricanes, which may not be able to maintain their counter-clockwise spiraling movement against the opposing clockwise force.

A strong west to east flow of air mass across the Pacific Southwest through the northern portions of the Southeastern States strongly reinforces the existing gyre and appears to be safeguarding most of the U.S. from the air borne pollution created by British Petroleum's massive oil volcano. Most of the pollution currently is blowing into the Atlantic or down along Florida towards Cuba.  Other states are unlikely to be affected at the current time.

The Sun may increase the power of the gyre.  The soaring count in Sunspots during the  past two days, up from 12 on Tuesday to 41 today (on Solar Flux 72 rising), will increase the ionization of the atmosphere and tend to cause an expansion in the air volume. This effect will thus tend to energize the atmosphere and increase the flow of air mass.  This effect can be subtle but it also can create profound effects, such as the expansion of the size and magnitude of Katrina as in spread across the Gulf  to New Orleans.  Katrina and New Orleans were the victims of a massive surge in the Sunspot Count which pushed Katrina into Category 5 wind force.

As the Summer unfolds during 2010, the growing Solar activity of Solar Sunspot Cycle 24 may magnify the distribution and spread of BP's pollution.  It may also increase the severity of the Hurricane Season.

The 2010 Hurricane Season is here but the U.S. National Hurricane Center continues to report no named storms or formations in the Atlantic tropical zone and none are expected during the next 48 hours.

Fortunately the strong flow of air mass across Central America into the Atlantic at this time seems to make a hurricane improbable at this time.
